Verdict: the Dog must stop subsidising the mission
The Dog helps because someone needs help. That is a virtue until the unpaid hours become a permanent subsidy. In 2027, the mission gets a budget, a boundary and a price.
Loyalty is not a discount code. A clear limit protects the work that matters most.
How to read 2027: earth meets fire, duty becomes visible
The Dog is Xu (Dog branch) earth. 2027 is Ding Wei (Goat branch), fire over earth. Fire brings responsibility and obligation to the surface. What you have been carrying becomes visible, including the parts nobody assigned to you.
Months follow solar terms. Use the calendar notes for planning; contracts and actual payments decide the cash.
January: calculate the real hourly rate of the unpaid project
Choose the most important unpaid project and calculate hours, costs and missed paid work. The result is information, not blame.
Maybe the project is important enough to keep; then it needs a budget. Maybe it has become a habit; then it can become smaller.
February: add a mission premium
Add a premium to the next offer for extra responsibility, availability or coordination. Explain it in one line.
Meaning does not make the work free. A premium makes the responsibility sustainable.
March: write a one-page boundary note
Write your hours, scope, response time and extra fees on one page. Give it to the client before the next large request.
“As much as possible” is not a boundary. A number is.
April: move a frequent caller to a retainer
Offer the client who calls most often a monthly retainer with fixed hours and response time. Give them a choice: individual billing or the retainer.
A retainer is not distance; it is a clearer form of reliability.
May: invoice the unpaid extras
Review the last three months and find work that was delivered but never billed. If there is a written record, send a supplementary invoice. If not, change the template.
Asking for payment is not greed when the work is documented.
June: no new mission before two invoices are paid
Do not take on a new good cause before two old invoices are paid. If the new cause is urgent, turn it into a small paid job.
A good deed financed by unpaid invoices is not generosity; it is a risk.
July: decline a request without a budget or deadline
If a request has no budget and no deadline, decline it once. Say: “Without a budget and date I cannot plan reliably; send both and I will review it.”
If the client does not return with both, the request was not serious. A clear no protects the paid work.
August: check the market rate
Compare three market examples for your role and raise one line in the standard offer. You do not need to raise everything.
The Dog compares against the client's need, not the market. Market rate is not a reason to neglect the client; it is a reason to price the work.
September: cap unpaid hours
Set a monthly cap for unpaid help, for example four hours. Beyond that, the work is paid, postponed or declined. Track the hours like paid work.
A cap is not a rejection of generosity; it is the condition that keeps it sustainable.
October: renewal with scope and payment plan
Send next year's terms with scope, start date and payment plan. Do not renew verbally because the relationship is good.
A written renewal helps the client budget and protects you from an open-ended obligation.
November: deposits for next year's bookings
Ask for a deposit for work booked into next year. The Dog trusts the client and waits; a deposit is not the opposite of trust. It is a shared plan.
Reserve the slot only after payment.
December: invoice the small favours you can document
Review small favours with a written record and invoice them. Do not chase the ones without evidence; turn those into a lesson for next year's template.
A clean close is the best basis for a year where loyalty and price fit together.
Three moves that matter
First, every unpaid mission gets a budget or an end date. Second, a boundary note with hours and response time. Third, a deposit for next year's bookings.
The Dog can stay loyal. It just needs to stop paying for loyalty twice.
When this reading would be wrong
This is a cultural reading of the birth-year branch, not a financial forecast. A signed contract, an actual payment, a market price or a tax deadline overrides any monthly theme.
A full BaZi chart includes the day master, month, day and hour pillars. Nothing here is investment, legal or tax advice.
