Pick the chair before the room
A chair that is easy to leave changes more of the day than any decoration. Look for a seat height that lets both feet rest flat, arms that take weight when standing and a firm cushion that does not slide. Test it for ten minutes before buying and again after a week in the room.
Set it where the light falls on a lap rather than into the eyes, within reach of a small table, and away from a draught. A footstool should steady the feet without creating a trip, and a blanket on the back keeps a long sit comfortable without tying anyone down. From time to time, find out the person to choose the chair themselves wherever possible.
The right one makes reading, meals, visits and dozing easier, and the wrong one quietly discourages all four.
Name one person who owns the calendar
From time to time, when several relatives keep calendars, double bookings and missed visits follow. Pass one person responsibility for maintaining a single master calendar, whether on paper or on a telephone, while anyone may report a date to them. The keeper writes down each appointment, visit, delivery and family occasion, then confirms it with the resident before promising the household to anyone else.
Describe the other helpers where the calendar lives and how to read it. To that end, review the next two weeks aloud once a week with the person whose life it describes, remembering that they may decline anything they do not want. Perhaps, if the keeper is away, a named deputy takes over rather than letting the schedule drift.
One owner and one shared view prevent most of the small chaos that calendars create.
Hold a list of trusted tradespeople
Houses need plumbers, electricians, locksmiths, glaziers and gardeners, and a stranger found in a hurry is a risk. From time to time, build a short list of tradespeople the household has used well, with their name, trade, telephone number and the date of the last job. Jot who recommended them and whether the price was fair.
All told, File the list with the household papers and give a copy to the person who usually arranges repairs. When needed, When a new worker is needed, compare two quotes where possible, ask for identification and never pay the full amount before the work is done. Avoid anyone who arrives uninvited after a storm or a flood.
A known list turns a stressful repair into an ordinary call and keeps the decision with the household rather than the doorstep.
Plan how the table is set
Meals go better when the table is arranged for comfort rather than formality. Review over the height of the table against the chair, keep the most used items within reach and place a jug of water where nobody has to stretch across a plate. A non-slip mat under the plate helps if one hand is unsteady, and a cloth napkin is easier to manage than a paper one that tears.
Allow the resident to decide the seating, the tablecloth and whether the radio or music is on. Eat together when possible, even if a carer has already eaten, because the company is part of the meal. From time to time, in the usual way, clear the table soon afterward without rushing anyone.
Many are small courtesies, and they make an ordinary lunch something a person can still look forward to.
Fix the money days in advance
Opt for one day a week for the household money: counting the purse, opening the post, checking the account and dealing with any letter that needs an answer. From time to time, place the day on the calendar and keep it. On that day, sit together, read the transactions aloud, compare receipts with the notebook and mark anything unfamiliar for a call through an official number.
Payments requested outside the money day wait for it unless a genuine deadline exists, and no payment leaves the same day it is requested. Cards, codes and seals stay in separate places, and no one shares a code or a screen. The routine takes half an hour and removes the hurry that both fraud and family disagreements rely upon, leaving generosity and ordinary spending untouched.
Label the keys and the cupboards they open
A bunch of unlabelled keys is a locked puzzle. Name each key with a small tag naming the door, box or cupboard it opens, and keep the bunch light enough to carry. Capture the labelled bunch and put the photograph with the household papers as a record.
Keep spare keys for the home with one named person only, and note that name on the same page. If a key no longer has a purpose, ask the resident whether it can be retired before discarding it. Hold a second labelled set inside the home for the person who cleans or gardens, and collect it when the arrangement ends.
From time to time, in the usual way, clear keys spare everyone the ordinary frustration of trying four locks in front of a waiting visitor, and they make the household easier for a substitute to manage.
Maintain the garden or balcony in use
Even a small outdoor space gives a person weather, colour and a reason to stand up. From time to time, look at that the route to it is level and lit, that the door opens easily and that a firm chair or bench waits outside. If anything, keep a light watering can, a pair of gloves and a few familiar plants near the door so the work is inviting rather than heavy.
Raised pots spare bending, and a small table holds a cup while the person sits. When needed, Find out what they want to grow, even if it is only herbs or one rose. A carer can do the lifting and the deep watering while the resident chooses, prunes or simply sits.
This kind of activity claims nothing about health; it simply keeps a pleasant part of a home in use.
Place Geng Shen with the 1920 local boundary
A certificate from 1920 does not settle the year pillar for a birth close to the turn of the year. From time to time, in the customary Four Pillars method the pillar changes at the local Li Chun (Start of Spring) instant, so an earlier birth may remain under Ji Wei (Goat branch) and a later one may use Geng Shen (Monkey branch). Nonetheless, decide it from the recorded date and time, the birthplace and the civil clock rules then in force there, including any seasonal adjustment or official change of hour.
When needed, A dependable calendrical source should give the transition and its method; this page does not establish a precise instant. That lunar new year is another convention and may give a different label. Per the usual way, when the evidence is incomplete, keep both Ji Wei and Geng Shen as candidates, and remember that the other three pillars remain to be calculated.
